Gardens by Gabriola
Oak sculpture garden
Built on Flash Panorama Player.
For this project, the clients were keen to have a very individual garden. The problems included steep, sloping ground with poorly drained soil and an un-inspired patio area, that came with the newly built house.
Budget considerations meant that it would be too costly to remove the patio area completely. This provided the key to redesigning the garden. By using curves the whole dynamic of the garden has been changed. Lines now lead the eye to features and focal points within the garden.

The main feature is the patio circle seating area, positioned in the sunniest part of the garden. The circle was cut into the existing bank and retained with log poles. From here lines radiate out in a 'vortex' effect to form planted beds and a gravelled area containing a water feature with Arbutus Unedo (Strawberry trees). The unusually shaped lawn was formed using an aluminium edging system.

Oak sleeper sculptures add a vertical accent to the garden as well as a a contrast to the 'relaxed' planting style.
Trees
Several trees were used in this design, including a Cercydifilium Japonicum (Katsura Tree), selected for its 'burnt sugar' aroma in the autumn, and a Liquidamber Styraciflua (Sweet gum) for spectacular autumn colour.
