One of the final drawings presented to the client.

For the redesign of this site, the clients were keen to have a pond, a patio area and a smaller lawn than had previously existed. Site problems included poor drainage, high ground water levels and a large shaded area cast by the neighbouring elm tree. the unusual shaped lawn in the new design would allow for larger planted beds and an area for growing raspberries. From the house, curving lines lead the eye out into the fields beyond, giving a sense of 'borrowed landscape'. Three silver birches add height and balance to one side of the garden as does the pergola and seating area. Other trees include Tibetan cherries and willow. At the rear boundary, red and yellow stemmed dogwoods were planted for their winter stem colour and tolerance of damp ground conditions.

The circular patio area is constructed from natural sandstone and edged in stone setts, with raised flagstone beds to accommodate alpines and plants that thrive in good drainage. ‘Huntlywood’ gravel was used throughout, chosen for its colours that match the existing pavers and brickwork etc.

Near the house a raised ornamental pool adds some formality with oak sleepers inlaid in the surrounding gravel path. When viewed from inside the house, reflections of the sky and sunsets in the water add a further dimension to this outdoor space.
